Special Meeting/Workshop

  3. Alternative Education
    Minutes: This is a Board Workshop designed to update Board members of the status of programs offered through the Department of Alternative Education.

    The workshop will include a brief description of our department program types, the key components of our programs as well as a distinguishing feature of each school site.

    Alexandra Deveroux, Alternative Education Director, reviewed the Department of Alternative Education Tapestry of Services and defined the four groups: Choice; Therapeutic; Behavior; and Juvenile Justice.

    Alternative Education staff presented Board Members with information regarding Key Components; Placement Procedures; Key Components - Choice Programs;

    The following groups were summarized:

    * Choice Programs: Life Skills (Roosevelt, Atlantic, West); Education Resource Center; and Gold Coast Middle School.

    * Behavior Intervention: Delray Boynton/Riviera Beach Academy; Lake Shore Annex, Oak Grove Academy, Excel (North, South, Central and West).

    * Therapeutic Sites (Family Referred): Eagle Academy

    * Criminal Justice: Palm Beach Marine Institute; PACE Center for Girls; Palm Beach Regional Juvenile Detention Center; Palm Beach County Jail; Palm Beach Juvenile Correctional Facility; and Sago Palm Academy.

    * Specialized Services: Delray Full Service Center Head Start Program, Gold Coast, Galaxy, Lake Shore Annex, Teenage Parent Program.

    Board Members discussed: Excel Program; gender separation; CEP; White Hat Program; and Workforce Development.

    Mrs. Burdick requested the cost of student per program and questioned whether the attendance rate is included when rating the success of the program.

    Mrs. Burdick questioned: placement time; wrap around services; transition services; and follow-up program.

    Dr. Robinson stated that she feels there is no short or long term plan for Alternative Education and requested the history of the Alternative Education Program.

    Dr. Robinson reviewed program enrollment statistics and stressed the importance of the teaching of the African/African-American curriculum.

    Board Members discussed: Choice and Intensive Program (middle and high school) in the Glades area; Twilight High; zero to five education; Head Start; geographic representation included in Five-Year Capital Plan; and allowing children to be on site at Teen Parent Programs.

    Dr. Richmond requested a detailed explanation of what is the goal and how will we know when we have reached it.
